NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- A Long Island woman coming home after a trip to the grocery store got a scary surprise from a thief seeking her diamond engagement ring.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening when 65-year-old Nahid Kamali was pulling into the garage of her upscale King's Point home. She said the suspect approached her and took her ring so quickly, she didn't even know what happened.
Kamali told CBS 2's John Slattery that "somebody said 'give me ring,'" and the next thing she knew, the whole incident ended in "one minute."
Kamali said the man had come to the driver's side door of her car and was reaching for her and kept saying "just give me ring." She said she was not hurt during the incident.
Jack Miller of the King's Point Police Department said the suspect put his hand over Kamali's mouth and said "I'm not going to hurt you, I only want the ring."
Kamali had just been to a grocery store in nearby Great Neck, walking the aisles where anyone could have seen her hands on the cart handle. Police believe the woman was targeted at the store.
"They saw her jewelry and followed her home," Miller said.
The victim was only able to give police a vague description of the thief. For other shoppers at the same store, news of the theft made for great concern.
"That's very scary. That's really scary," one customer said.
Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the grocery store and the neighborhood to see if they can identify the suspect.
