Police: Video Captures Woman Stealing Rings From Nyack Antique Store
NYACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was caught on surveillance video stealing $5,000 worth of rings from an antique store in Nyack, police said.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at My Own Little Corner Antique Shop located at 132 Main St.
Video shows the woman reaching behind a glass display case and grabbing a tray of 24 gold rings as the shop owner's back is turned to her. The suspect manages to slip the rings into her bag without being noticed, police said.
"At this point we're not sure who this woman is. We're hoping someone in the community will reach out to us and get us that information," Captain Don Butterworth told TV 10/55's Sonia Rincon.
Police said it looked like she had done this before.
"She was very casual about it. She didn't run out of the store. She closed it up in the pocketbook and walked out," Capt. Butterworth said.
Elaine Schloss owns the store, she said she turned her back for a moment to answer another customer's question.
"And she just, in two minutes, took half my livelihood away," Schloss said.
Schloss said the antique rings had gold, platinum, and diamonds, and that the thief asked an unusual question.
"Does anyone else have gold around here? And that had me on alert, and I was just so careful with her, but I didn't know that the case was open and she reached in," Schloss said.
The thief had to have seen herself on camera from the moment she walked in. The surveillance system isn't exactly hidden, but that didn't discourage her.
"It was just a terrible thing." Schloss said, "I don't know how anyone could do that to somebody else."
Schloss said she hopes someone recognize her.
"Please if you know who she is please let the police know," Schloss said.
Orangetown police have posted the video to their Facebook page and are hoping the public can help catch the suspect.
"We're getting a lot of people that have seen the video and are calling in all different types of information, so we're hoping to get a positive ID on the person so we can help to get some of this property back," Capt. Butterworth told 1010 WINS.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Frank Buhler of the Orangetown Police Department at 845-359-3730 Ext.1.
