NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There are two beaches in Queens that are very different and there used to be a clear division between them.

Now, those on both sides want things back the way they were, WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported.

A fence used to separate the nude beach at Jacob Riis Park's bay 2 from the family friendly beach at Neponsit.

But Tropical Storm Irene destroyed it.

"Since the fence has come down there's been a lot more harassment against queer people and people of color on this side," a person named Jessie told Silverman.

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said the parks department decided to leave things alone without any input.

"This community has spoken loud and clear that we need the fence, not just for beautification but to keep our families safe," he said.

Do you think the fence should be rebuilt? Sound off in the comments section below.
