Man Arrested Months After Southern State Parkway Police Chase, Crash

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An arrest has been made in connection with a police chase that left a Nassau County officer seriously injured last year.

Louis Blanton, of Amityville, has been charged with assault on a police officer and unlawful fleeing.

Authorities said Blanton was at the wheel of a car that led police on a high-speed chase on the Southern State Parkway on Nov. 21, 2011.

The chase was sparked after a North Massapequa resident called police about someone switching license plates on their car.

The injured officer responded and spotted the four-door Honda Accord on the parkway.

After noticing the officer, police said the suspect slammed on the brakes, causing the officer to swerve and hit a guardrail, which propelled the cruiser back into traffic, where it was hit by another vehicle.

The female officer from the department's 7th Precinct suffered several broken bones and required at least two surgeries, officials said.
