The fire gutted the Pavilion, a popular Fire Island nightspot, and La Fountaine as well as several other businesses in the main commercial area and also spread to an unoccupied home nearby.
"Probably about a quarter of the community down by the Bay front area, so a devastating loss," said Nicole Pressly Wolf, publisher of the Fire Island News.
Journalist Andrew Kirtzman, one of the owners of the Pavilion, told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera the club is severely damaged.
"Two partners and I bought about 80 percent of the commercial district in the Pines two years ago and it was the culmination of a dream and to see this go up in flames is pretty wrenching," Kirtzman said. "But we're going to rebuild it."

The fire burned for more than two hours until firefighters from 28 local volunteer departments could get it under control.
Many of the firefighters called into help had to arrive by ferry from the mainland, which took extra time.
There are no reports of any injuries. The cause is under investigation, though officials said it was too early to determine if the fire was suspicious.
The total amount of damages is unknown.
