Three pedestrian have been killed on Main Street in Smithtown since November 2009 and drivers are often seen speeding through the busy area.
State officials say that by the end of spring they plan to try and make the area safer by slowing down traffic and changing the two westbound lanes into one.
They also plan to use what is called the 'Rest in Red' system during off-peak hours. The system keeps signals red until a car is electronically detected.
