Trump’s taxes

The publication of Donald Trump’s 1995 state tax filings has renewed pressure on the Republican presidential candidate to release more information. The documents show Trump reported almost a billion dollars in business losses. We take a close look at what that really says about the finances of the GOP presidential nominee, who’s made such a talking point of his business acumen.

Veep-stakes

Vice-presidential debates have rarely had a lasting impact on the course of a presidential race, but they have had their newsworthy moments over the years — particularly in elections when there’s a concern about advanced age or competence at the top of the ticket. Ahead of tomorrow’s VP face-off, we look back at some of the most memorable vice-presidential debate moments.

Arctic frontier

Arctic sea ice is melting so fast that we’ll see in our lifetime something that hasn’t happened, it’s believed, since the end of the last ice age: the opening of the Arctic Ocean. With it will come access to trade routes and trillions of dollars worth of oil and natural gas. “60 Minutes” sent Lesley Stahl to the battleground where the next big fight over oil and mineral resources is already taking shaping.

Nate Parker

Nate Parker’s film “The Birth of a Nation” was getting a lot of Oscar buzz, until an uproar over a serious incident in his past. Seventeen years ago, as a college student, Parker and his roommate were accused of rape. He was found not guilty but now, on the cusp of stardom, he finds himself back on trial in the court of public opinion. Anderson Cooper asks him on “60 Minutes” whether he now wishes to apologize.

Problem officers

Attorney General Loretta Lynch is in Dallas promoting police-community relations amid ongoing protests over deadly police shootings of black men. Last week we reported on the lack of oversight that allows officers with checkered pasts to keep patrolling the streets, so we asked the attorney general to respond.

“Bear country”

A Montana man who was attacked and savaged twice by the same bear has survived to tell his story on Facebook, including with a video he shot himself just moments after escaping the woods with major lacerations and blood still streaming down his face. Todd Orr’s account is harrowing, and graphic.

Sperm banks

IVF treatments have increased 65 percent in the U.S. since 2003. With more same-sex couples deciding to have children, many seek reproductive help. One option is sperm banks, a sector estimated to earn about $88 million. But some industry advocates have big concerns about the lack of federal oversight.
