"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" character names revealed

Fans are now getting to know more about the new faces (and robots) they saw in that much-buzzed-about teaser trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy came up with a unique way to share the names of the new characters we'll meet in "Episode VII" -- creating a set of "trading cards" similar to the ones released for the original "Star Wars" film in 1977.

The cards, unveiled by Entertainment Weekly, show the characters played by John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac, as well as a shadowy figure that must be someone from the Dark Side.

Isaac's X-Wing-piloting character is named Poe Dameron, while John Boyega's card reveals his Stormtrooper suit-sporting Finn is "on the run." Daisy Ridley is playing a character named Rey and the cloaked character wielding that new crossguard lightsaber will be called Kylo Ren. That cute little droid seen in the teaser has a name now, too -- you can call it BB-8.

They don't reveal much else, save for a little caption below each of the photos, but in typical Abrams fashion there may be more here than meets the eye -- when asked by EW if there was any significance behind what collectible card number each character was assigned, he replied, "YES."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
