"Mad Men" season five finale breaks ratings record

(CBS News) Don Draper may have been alone at the bar in the season finale of "Mad Men" on Sunday, but he was not alone when it came to viewers.

AMC's hit drama attracted a record 2.7 million viewers for its season five finale, reports Reuters.

The series had its biggest weekly audiences during a season yet, with an average 2.6 million U.S. viewers, up 15 percent over season four.

"We make 'Mad Men' for the fans," series creator Matthew Weiner said. "My goal is to tell a compelling story and entertain people and it thrills me that people keep watching."

Season five was filled with drama and change, as the characters settled into the 1960s. It featured everything from an LSD trip to a suicide. There was marriage trouble, upheaval at the firm and marital affairs.

Music also played a large role, as the season kicked off with Megan (Jessica Pare) performing the French song "Zou Bisou Bisou." Music infiltrated the other story lines, too, with a Rolling Stones concert and The Beatles' song "Tomorrow Never Knows" playing a part in telling the story. Sunday's finale ended with Nancy Sinatra's "You Only Live Twice."
