At a Hillary Clinton campaign event in Iowa Tuesday, a voter floated the idea of nominating President Obama to the Supreme Court, and she seemed surprised and delighted by the idea.

"Wow, what a great idea. Nobody has ever suggested that to me. Wow, I love that, wow," the Democratic presidential candidate responded. "He may have a few other things to do, but I tell you that's a great idea."

But the president is apparently less than wowed by the thought of serving on the court. The White House says Mr. Obama's post-presidency plans do not, in fact, include becoming a Supreme Court justice.

Spokesman Josh Earnest says Mr. Obama would prefer to spend his post-presidency handling a wider range of issues than those dealt with by the high court.

The president himself said in 2014 that serving on the Supreme Court might be too "monastic" for him.

"When I got out of law school, I chose not to clerk," he said. "Partly because I was an older student, but partly because I don't think I have the temperament to sit in a chamber and write opinions."
