GOP candidates make 2012 New Year's resolutions

As 2011 winds down and the Republican presidential primary race heats up with Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, "Face the Nation" asked the seven GOP White House hopefuls what resolution they would be making to ring in 2012.

Here are their responses:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney

"This coming year I will endeavor to say thank you more often. Appreciation is an underappreciated quality and too often I think I get a lot of help from folks and I nod my head or move on without stopping and staying thank you, so I want to be more appreciative."

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman

"A little more love and compassion. I hope, you know as we're winding down in Iraq and we're looking at a lot of families that have lost a mom or a dad or a spouse in the theater of combat, Because when I say, this nation has given its all, this nation has given its all. It would be a great thing if this next year, where we have a widow or a spouse who has lost a loved one or a child that doesn't have a dad or a mom to show a little more love and concern to them, that would be a great thing for this country to do."

Texas Rep. Ron Paul

"My New Years Resolution... Oh boy... Can I think about this for a second?"

. . .

"My own personal goals in life has always been to improve myself in delivering a message and make sure that when people come to hear me that I deliver a proper message and do a better job each time I do it so I'll continue to work on that resolution."

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann

"Yes, it's to work very, very hard and win the Iowa caucus and then win the New Hampshire primary and then win the South Carolina primary and then go on and win the Florida primary, so my resolution is to win primaries next year and become the nominee."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum

"I haven't thought about that yet, but I suspect you might guess."

+++

Texas Gov. Rick Perry

"I resolve to pray more often for our young men and women who are in our combat theaters that they'll come home soon safe, obviously for my family, for their health, for their prosperity and that 2012 is a very successful and great year for them and for the people of America."

"I also resolve to spend a great deal of time here in this campaign laying out bold ideas and issues that the people of this country really want to hear about - how are we gonna get Americans back working, and how are we gonna create an economy that gives people the dignity of a job, so laying out those really visionary, bold ideas, but simple, that Americans can get their arms and their minds around and have hope for a great future for this county."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich

"Do you have a New Year's resolution?" Gingrich turns to his wife Callista. "Do you have a New Year's resolution? She says we have to work through those."

"I can tell you my New Year's resolution will not include three kinds of butter (Callista laughs) which was the most interesting story of the morning. We were on 'Fox and Friends' and part of what they were talking about was part of what the president's part of what he ate last night, one of the dishes had three kinds of butter."
