Clark's good friend, Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif, told "Extra" about the surgeries. "All of a sudden, he got a feeling in his arm about 9:30 [Wednesday] morning and he was gone by 11:15," Drier told "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli. Official reports said only that Clark was in the hospital for a minor, outpatient medical procedure.

Clark suffered a stroke in December 2004 just before his annual appearance on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve." He returned the following year and, although his speech at times was difficult to understand, many, including other stroke victims, praised his bravery.

His speech continued to be halting, even in his last appearance earlier this year. Because of that, Clark became a symbol of hope to others struggling with the residual effects of a stroke.

Clark had suffered from type 2 diabetes since 1994 and had served as a spokesman for the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
