(CBS/AP) PHOENIX - A Mesa teenager accused of trying to conceal her childbirth by throwing the newborn out a window has been arrested for attempted homicide.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say the 16-year-old girl was also taken into custody Tuesday night on suspicion of child abuse. Her name is being withheld because she's a juvenile.

Authorities suspect the teen gave birth to a child in the bathroom of her family's east Mesa home on Sunday.

Paramedics responded to the home after her family reported that the teen was bleeding heavily. Deputies say it appears the baby fell about 5 feet after being thrown out the bathroom window and hit her head on a brick.

According to CBS affiliate KPHO, authorities determined the teen was trying to conceal the pregnancy from her family.

Authorities say the child is expected to survive and remains in the custody of state Child Protective Services.
