8 treated for "spice" drug overdoses in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say eight people have become ill -- two of them seriously -- in downtown San Diego after apparently overdosing on the synthetic marijuana drug mix "spice."

Fire Capt. Joe Amador says around 1 p.m. Sunday, authorities began receiving calls about people appearing to be under the influence of drugs in various areas of the Gaslamp and East Village districts.

Amador says symptoms ranged from runny noses to seizures and vomiting, and two people appeared to be belligerent "almost to the point of violence," so police were called.

He says those affected ranged from 13 years old to 28 and their conditions ranged from mild to serious. Seven of the eight were taken to hospitals for treatment.

CBS affiliate KFMB reports that according to police, the spice was in a black package that had a dragon on the label.

It's not clear where they obtained the drug but the investigation continues.
