2016 Rio Olympics odds: Who are the gold medal favorites?

With the 2016 Rio Olympics now officially underway, Las Vegas sports book Bovada has released its odds in a number of different categories.

Are costs of the Olympics worth it for host cities? 04:34

Bovada has the U.S. (2/13) and China (4/1) as heavy favorites to capture the most gold medals at the games.

American athletes Michael Phelps (swimming), Ryan Lochte (swimming) and Justin Gatlin (track and field) are at or near the top of the odds for their events.

Phelps has 1/1 odds to win the 100m butterfly and 4/5 in the 200m individual medley with Lochte right behind at 2/1.

Gatlin has the best odds to unseat Jamaica's Usain Bolt in the 100m (8/5) and 200m (3/1).

However, Jamaica is still expected to dominate with Bolt favored in the 100m (1/2) and 200m (4/13) while their 4x100m men's (1/2) and women's (2/3) relay teams are projected for gold as well.

Host Brazil is anticipated by Bovada to win in men's and women's beach volleyball.
