LeBron James and the Miami Heat rebounded nicely from a two-game skid. James had 21 points, eight assists and 14 boards for his first double-digit rebounding game of the season, leading the Heat to a 103-82 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night. Dwyane Wade had 19 points and five rebounds in his return from a two-game absence and the Heat controlled the glass until garbage time after getting hammered on the boards by Detroit and Chicago in consecutive losses. James' 14 boards tied his high in a Heat uniform. Kevin Martin scored 19 points for the Timberwolves. But they sorely missed Kevin Love, who was with his family following the death of his grandmother on Wednesday night.
The Mexico City arena where the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves are playing an NBA game Wednesday night was evacuated 45 minutes before tipoff because of smoke inside the arena.
Kevin Martin had 27 points with some key baskets down the stretch, Kevin Love had his usual double-double and the Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a three-game losing streak with a 112-106 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. Martin made two free throws with just under 6 minutes left to put Minnesota up 94-90. Ricky Rubio then had a steal that led to a long fast-break jumper by Martin, who later beat the shot clock with a jumper and then added a 3-pointer. That stretched the lead to 103-92, matching its largest, with 3:12 left. Love, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, also had a buzzer-beating shot. His 3-pointer with just under 2 minutes left made it 106-95.
George Hill scored a season-high 26 points, and Paul George had 11 of his 26 points during the decisive run Monday, leading the Pacers to a 98-84 victory over Minnesota. Indiana has won four straight since losing at Chicago, is 13-1 for the first time in franchise history and remained perfect in eight home games this season. And the NBA's hottest team won this game with the same script they've been using all season — a strong defense. The Timberwolves (8-8) shot just 32.6 percent from the field and was held to a season-low point total. Its previous worst was 92 points at Cleveland on Nov. 4. Kevin Love finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds.
Aaron Brooks scored a season-high 26 points to pick up the slack for the injured James Harden, and the Houston Rockets beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-101 on Saturday night. The Rockets led throughout, and Omri Casspi, Jeremy Lin and Brooks made consecutive 3-pointers in a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter and extend the lead to 91-74. Harden, who leads the Rockets with 24.2 points per game, sat out with a sore left foot. Lin started in his place and scored 19, but it was Brooks who shined.
Kevin Garnett sat in the visitor's locker room at Target Center, searching for answers to difficult questions after yet another disheartening loss by his Brooklyn Nets. Just down the hall, Minnesota's Kevin Love got dressed a few feet from the locker that Garnett called home for 12 years. And while he was trying to be respectful of the player that put the Timberwolves franchise on the map, Love delivered the hard truth that has dropped like an anvil on Garnett and the $190 million Brooklyn Nets this season. "I joked with (Kevin Martin) tonight that I'm glad I didn't have to guard him in his prime," Love said after needing just three quarters to bury KG and the Nets en route to a 30-point victory Friday night. "Because he was something else. He's a Hall of Fame player. He's the Big Ticket."
Kevin Garnett has never lost to his former team. He's 7-0 against the Timberwolves with four of those wins at Target Center, averaging 14.9 points and 10.3 rebounds in those games. "I played in this building before, for countless years," Garnett said, before breaking into a smile and a chuckle. "I hope that I at least make a couple shots in this place." Indeed, more than just a couple. A Garnett return is a good chance to break out the old highlight tape, and remember.
Chase Budinger has rejoined his Minnesota Timberwolves teammates for light workouts at practice while he works his surgically repaired left knee back into shape. Budinger likely remains a month or more from playing in games after offseason surgery to remove a portion of the meniscus in his knee. Budinger was doing some individual shooting drills after practice on Monday. He says he's not putting a specific timetable on his return, only that he's taking things "week by week." Budinger signed a three-year, $16 million contract in July. But while he was working out in August to prepare for the season, he re-injured the same knee that kept him out for four months last year.
kevin Love had 23 points and 12 rebounds and Nikola Pekovic had 20 points and 12 boards to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 106-88 victory over the Boston Celtics on Saturday night. Kevin Martin scored 20 on 6-for-18 shooting and Dante Cunningham scored 12 off the bench to help Minnesota rebound from a tough loss in Denver the previous night. Avery Bradley scored 27 points and Vitor Faverani had nine points and 14 rebounds for the Celtics. But Jeff Green went 0 for 6 from the floor and Boston's 22 turnovers led to 28 points for the Timberwolves.
C.J. Miles scored 19 points, Kyrie Irving added 15 and the Cleveland Cavaliers held off a late rally for a 93-92 victory over Minnesota on Monday night, handing the Timberwolves their first loss of the season. The Timberwolves nearly erased a 23-point deficit midway through the third quarter to stay unbeaten. Cleveland led 93-84, but was scoreless over the final 2:43. Kevin Love's basket with 38 seconds remaining cut the lead to one point. Following a miss by Irving with 15 seconds left, the Timberwolves called timeout to set up the last shot.
Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love is the NBA's Western Conference player of the week for the opening week of the season. Love leads the NBA with 29.7 points per game and is second with 14.7 rebounds per game. He powered the Wolves to three victories last week for their first 3-0 start since 2001. His off-balance, one-handed bank shot at Madison Square Garden on Monday night helped the Wolves hold off Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks. The league also issued Love a warning for flopping in the game against the Knicks. Love was warned for flopping when Knicks rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. bumped him at the top of the key in the fourth quarter.
It's been a dizzying summer for Flip Saunders. After being hired to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves as president of basketball operations, Saunders has been frantically reshaping the roster, meeting with the team's business side and immersing himself in a job he's never held before.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have exercised their fourth-year contract options on point guard Ricky Rubio and small forward Derrick Williams, as expected. The move on Williams was less of a sure thing, but the Wolves are counting on continued improvement this season from the second overall pick in the 2011 draft. The decision on these third-year players was announced by the Wolves on Saturday, along with the move to waive center Chris Johnson. That brought the roster to 15 players for the regular season, giving forward Robbie Hummel and guard A.J. Price the last two spots.
What are the odds Kevin Love leads the NBA in rebounds in 2013-14? Or what are the chances Minnesota's favorite Spaniard – Ricky Rubio – doles out the most assists per game? Actually, pretty good.
J.J. Barea scored 22 points, Kevin Love added 19 and the Minnesota Timberwolves cruised past the Philadelphia 76ers 125-102 in a preseason game Wednesday night. Kevin Martin added 13 points and A.J. Price had 10 for the Timberwolves, who improved to 4-2 in the preseason with one game remaining, Thursday at Detroit.
Austin Daye scored 12 points to help the Toronto Raptors win a sloppy preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, 104-97 on Saturday night. Tyler Hansbrough was the only other Raptor in double figures with 11. The Raptors shot 50 percent to overcome 35 fouls and three technicals for delay of game, which is a point of emphasis with officials this season. Kevin Love had 28 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes for the Timberwolves. But the Wolves shot just 35 percent and lost despite forcing 26 turnovers and going to the foul line for 50 shots. They missed 15 free throws.
Nate Wolters isn't used to coming off the bench. He routinely played every minute starring at South Dakota State, after all. Now he's a rookie fighting for playing time with the Milwaukee Bucks, coming back to South Dakota for the first time as a pro for an NBA preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday.
Milos Teodosic had 26 points, nine assists and five rebounds to lift CSKA Moscow to a 108-106 overtime exhibition victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Nenad Krstic had 13 points and seven rebounds and Sasha Kaun had 12 points and nine boards to get CSKA off to a winning start in their two-game American tour. CSKA beat the Los Angeles Clippers in 2006 and the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010. The Russian team led by 18 points in the first half, but Derrick Williams scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to get the Wolves back in it. Williams had nine rebounds.
Kevin Love showed up for the start of Minnesota Timberwolves training camp eager to put last season behind him, and it's hard to blame him. Love played in only 18 games last season because of a right hand that was broken twice and a minor knee injury. Some fans turned on him as well, so Love threw himself into a rigorous training regimen this summer and comes back with something to prove. Love showed up with a chiseled frame and ready to reclaim his spot as the league's best power forward.
When Milt Newton was finishing up his graduate studies at Kansas, he told anyone that would listen that his goal was to one day become an NBA general manager. It took him 22 years to get there, but Newton has finally arrived. That the opportunity is coming in the place where his wife grew up and under the man he befriended while they worked together in Washington made it worth the wait.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired former Washington Wizards executive Milt Newton as general manager. The Timberwolves announced the hiring Friday. Newton spent the previous 10 years with the Wizards, most recently serving as vice president of player personnel. He worked with current Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders when Saunders coached the Wizards. Saunders will continue to have final say on all organizational issues with the Wolves. But Newton will help with scouting, salary cap management and other personnel issues.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to terms on a five-year deal with restricted free agent center Nikola Pekovic. Wolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders tweets that the deal is done. Saunders and Pekovic's agent, Jeff Schwartz, spent more than a month negotiating the deal, which was completed on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are working on re-signing restricted free agent Nikola Pekovic. President of basketball operations Flip Saunders says talks are "moving in a positive direction." Saunders has met with Pekovic's agent, Jeff Schwartz, and has extended an offer of four years and $48 million. The two sides continue to have discussions that Saunders termed cordial. He says he believes both sides eventually will "have a meeting of the minds" and get a deal done.
