It may not feel like it, what with 80-degree temperatures this week, but hockey season is upon us. As the Minnesota Wild prepares for its opening night on Thursday, the cooks of Levy Restaurants at the Xcel Energy Center are busy cooking new creations for fans.
The Minnesota Wild trimmed their roster over the weekend, sending promising young forward Jason Zucker and two other players to Iowa of the AHL. Forwards Brett Bulmer and Jake Dowell also were assigned to Iowa. But Zucker was the only mild surprise in the group. The speedster Zucker had four goals and one assist in 20 games for the Wild last season. But he was unlikely to play on opening night against the Los Angeles Kings, so the Wild sent him down to get some work in with the Iowa Wild, the team's new AHL affiliate.
First there was the lockout. Then they sputtered through a shortened season, barely made the playoffs and were bounced out quickly by the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
Jason Zucker scored the lone shootout goal and assisted on the tying goal to lift the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in a preseason game Monday night. Zucker's shot trickled under the outstretched left leg pad of Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 26 saves in regulation and overtime. Minnesota goalie Josh Harding thwarted all three Columbus attempts in the shootout with the last one from Matt Calvert hitting the post. Harding stopped 20 shots before the shootout.
Jason Pominville scored the only goal of the shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild to a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night. Minnesota took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes on goals Carson McMillan and Charlie Coyle. New Wild defenseman Keith Ballard assisted on both. Winnipeg (1-2-2) stormed back with second-period goals by Eric O'Dell, Patrice Cormier and Paul Postma. Minnesota defenseman Ryan Suter forged a 3-3 tie in the third period, scoring off a feed from Zach Parise.
Sam Atkinson and Ryan Johansen each had a goal and an assist, and a Columbus Blue Jackets split squad beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 in a preseason game Tuesday night. Mark Letestu also scored for the Blue Jackets, who got 20 saves from Jeremy Smith. Nino Niederreiter scored for Minnesota, which played its preseason opener.
Minnesota is expecting another set of twins. These will be a baby boy and girl for Wild star Zach Parise. He and his wife, Alisha, are expecting in January. Parise confirmed the news Thursday, the first day of training camp for the team.
