School is out until the fall and we're in the heart of the summer, but prep football season isn't far from getting underway. Programs across the state will be starting their fall camps in less than a month, and games will get started in about six or seven weeks.
The Timberwolves will open a five-game summer league schedule on July 13 against the NBA D-League select team. Highlighting the roster will be both of the team's first-round draft choices, Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng.
Yunel Escobar and Ben Zobrist homered during a three-run seventh inning and the surging Tampa Bay Rays beat the Minnesota Twins 7-4 on Monday night. Escobar had a leadoff tiebreaking homer in the seventh off Samuel Deduno (4-4), who departed after Desmond Jennings followed with a triple. Caleb Thielbar entered and got one out before Zobrist gave Tampa Bay a 6-3 lead with a two-run shot. Alex Torres (3-0) pitched a perfect seventh for the Rays, who have won nine of 10 and moved to a season-best 10-games (50-40) over .500. Escobar also had a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Larry Fitzgerald Jr. is among the best in the game, and it all started in Minneapolis. Today the all-pro wide receiver brought a piece of the NFL to the first field he played on. Fitzgerald, who lives in Eden Prairie in the offseason, credits the beginning of his success to the adults who believed in him as a child. "The coaches that coached me here, I mean, so many people invested in me as a child, and they didn't have to," Fitzgerald said.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant is engaged to Minnesota Lynx guard Monica Wright. Wright confirmed the engagement following Minnesota's 91-59 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday night. Durant, who was selected with the second overall pick in the 2007 draft, just completed his sixth season in the NBA. The 24-year-old forward averaged 28.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists last season.
Chad Greenway came from the University of Iowa hoping to make an impact, but suffered a knee injury. He has since recovered, and eventually became a foundational part of the Vikings organization. He is now a leader and he wants to go out as a man who helped his boyhood team reach new heights. Greenway also has a deep passion for the giving back. Maya Moore scored 14 of her 23 points in the third quarter and the Minnesota Lynx earned their 10th straight victory over Phoenix, beating the Mercury 91-59 on Sunday night. Monica Wright added 17 and Lindsay Whalen chipped in 14 for the Lynx, who earned their third victory over the Mercury this season in a winning streak that dates to 2011. Minnesota's defense set the tone in the first half, holding the league's No. 1 offense to 29 points on 32.5 percent shooting while also forcing nine Mercury turnovers.
Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus left Sunday's game against the Phoenix Mercury in the second quarter with a left ankle injury. Augustus landed awkwardly after defending DeWanna Bonner's layup with 7:01 left in the second quarter and left the game. Her return is questionable. Augustus, who entered the game ranked 13th in the WNBA at 16.3 points per game, left the game with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have waived center Greg Stiemsma and forward Mickael Gelabale. The team announced the moves Sunday. Stiemsma played in 76 games for the Wolves last season, where he average 4 points and 3.4 rebounds in 15.9 minutes per game. The team signed the 6'11 center as a free agent last August. Gelabale played in 36 games a year ago for Minnesota, and posted average of 5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per contest. The team signed the 6'7 forward to a pair of 10-day contracts in January, then for the remainder of last season in February.
Scott Diamond is running out of answers while trying to solve his pitching problems. Todd Redmond threw one-hit ball over five innings for his first major league win and the Toronto Blue Jays hit three home runs off Diamond Sunday to beat the slumping Twins 11-5. "It's frustrating the way it all worked out again," said Diamond, who's allowed eight homers in his past four starts. "I'm really struggling keeping guys in the park." Diamond (5-8) allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings and matched a career-high with four walks, losing for the fourth time in six starts.
Mitch Ohnstad loves basketball. He trains players in the sport, and his wife coaches a high school team. And oh yeah, he still plays the game at a high level, 17 years since he was named Minnesota's Mr. Basketball while at Faribault High School. "Growing up in Faribault and not far from the Twin Cities, I was able to follow the University of Minnesota, and grew up with the dream of playing there. And had a lot of opportunities playing in Faribault, being able to play as a young player coming up in eighth grade, being able to play varsity.
The Minnesota Vikings are in off-season mode or a few more weeks, so it's a good time to catch up with Kyle Rudolph, a tight end who's blossoming before our eyes. Rudolph's becoming a favorite target of Christian Ponder, and a player who looks like the future is bright. He's also coming in to training camp with the confidence of a veteran.
Dan Kaczrowski's a realist, who has the work ethic of an optimist. The St. Anthony High graduate earned All-American honors at Hamline, but knew that being drafted in the 26th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2009 draft meant he wasn't quite on the club's We'll-Be-Seeing-You-In-Phoenix-Soon list.
