Looking for their first home win of the season, the Orlando Magic got a big lift from a pair of rookies. Aaron Gordon had six of his 17 points in overtime, and the Magic beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-103 on Friday night. "This is why they drafted me," said Gordon, a 19-year-old reserve forward who also had six rebounds. "They know what I can do. My number was called and I was ready to go. I don't want to hear about (age). That would be a crutch, and I don't want any part of it."
Charlie Coyle just signed a three-year, $15-million contract with the Minnesota Wild. How did he get there? He grew up in the Boston area and paid the price every day. There were no short cuts. "I just always tried to do little things on and off the ice. I played prep school, public high school, juniors in high school," Coyle said.
Ricky Rubio has left the Minnesota Timberwolves' game at Orlando with a sprained left ankle. The 24-year-old Rubio was helped off the floor and taken to the locker room for X-rays after landing awkwardly with 2:28 remaining in the second quarter. The point guard had drawn a foul on a drive to the basket.

It's now a two-game season for the St. Thomas football team, and assuming the Tommies win both of their remaining games, they'll be in virtually the same spot they were in at this time last year. The Tommies, ranked No. 24 in the latest Division III poll, went back and forth with Concordia (Moorhead) last Saturday in the fourth quarter and came away with a 35-32 victory over the Cobbers.
Mike Hoffman scored twice and Craig Anderson stopped 34 shots to lead the Ottawa Senators over the Minnesota Wild 3-0 Thursday night. Clarke MacArthur also had a goal for the Senators. Anderson earned his second shutout this season and the 28th of his career. Niklas Backstrom made 14 saves for Minnesota. The Wild have outshot their opponents in all 12 games this season, but they've lost their past two.
The Eagan Wildcats girls' volleyball team won 3 to 0 Thursday and will advance to the semifinals for the second year in a row. But as WCCO's David McCoy says, as much success as the team has had it can't compare to that enjoyed by one family.
