Jonny Brodzinski scored twice in the third period to lead St. Cloud State to a 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference win over North Dakota on Friday. Brodzinski broke a 1-1 tie at 1:38 of the third period and added an insurance goal on the power play at 9:43, as the Huskies (5-5-1, 2-2-1 NCHC) handed UND its first road loss of the season. The Huskies outshot UND 34-27.
It's a new feeling at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights -- winning on the football field. At this school, most of the success has come indoor on mats. Quarterback Michael Busch says his team finally gets to feel like the wrestlers. "They're always in the state, competition for a state championship, and we got the opportunity and it's like the atmosphere of wrestling season," Busch said.
Will Rains ran for a 75-yard touchdown with 2:46 to play and Eden Prairie rallied to win its fourth straight Class 6A title with a 28-27 victory over Totino-Grace Friday night. It's the school's 10th title since 1996. The Eagles have won 30 games in a row.
Nathan Adrian won the 50-yard freestyle in under 19 seconds in the Arena Grand Prix on Friday night in Minneapolis. Adrian was a half-second ahead of the rest of the field. Bruno Frautus of Brazil was second in 19.33, and Miguel Ortiz Canavate of Spain took third in 19.42.
Tony Parker scored 28 points in 25 minutes and the San Antonio Spurs cruised past the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves 121-92 on Friday night. Parker made 12 of 18 shots, including all three of his 3-pointers, and Danny Green scored 18 points for the Spurs, who got an easy night with a game against the Brooklyn Nets at home on Saturday.
It still sounds the same at the Minnesota High School Prep Bowl, with bands belting out the tunes, fans cheering their lungs out. But cheering in comfort depends on your layers. Holdingford fan Angie Lichy and her boys brought a little extra to TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. "We have sleeping bags, lots of layers of clothes and … I made the boys wear their long underwear," Lichy said.
The Minnesota Vikings are putting more money into the new stadium under construction in downtown Minneapolis. The Vikes are adding another $647,000 for stadium extras, from sideline seating to food concessions. The latest upgrades include upgrading the team's locker room, expanding cooking and concession areas and adding end-zone seating areas it calls "Red Zone Mini-Suites."
Minnesota Vikings running back Matt Asiata will miss Sunday's game against Green Bay because of a concussion. Asiata has not yet been cleared to practice. Running back Jerick McKinnon was listed as probable to play the Packers after participating in Friday's practice on a limited basis. Recently signed veteran Ben Tate could get some time at running back.
A late-season position switch paid off nicely for Nathan Brinker and Holdingford. Lined up as a running back, Brinker connected with quarterback Austin Gerads for an 8-yard touchdown in double overtime, giving Holdingford a 20-18 edge over BOLD to win the Class 2A state title Friday at the Prep Bowl.
Kevin Martin's 37-point effort against the New York Knicks on Wednesday night just got even more impressive. Martin played the final three and a half quarters of that game with a fractured wrist on his shooting hand, the Minnesota Timberwolves announced Friday hours before hosting San Antonio. He is out indefinitely.
C.J. Schwintek ran for 146 yards and a touchdown as Becker beat DeLaSalle 24-6 Friday in the Prep Bowl to win the Class 4A state football championship. Dawson Brown had three interceptions for Becker (12-1), which won its second school title.
