Winter's Woes Suddenly Seem To Melt Away
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (WCCO) -- If you've spent time outside recently, you can clearly see a whimpering winter in retreat. Before winter officially leaves, however, it's leaving behind plenty of water-pocked pavement.
During the weekend warm-up, public works crews around the state raced to open ice-clogged storm drains and close tire-jarring potholes.
"There are a lot of potholes right now, so we get out as many units as we can to get the worst potholes right away," said Steve Nauer, Brooklyn Park's city street superintendent.
The public works crews filled potholes over the warm-up with a cold pavement mix – a mix three times more expensive than the normal tar mix used in the summer. It might cost more, but those potholes need to be covered to prevent further damage to cars.
Crews will be out filling potholes the rest of the week, as long as the weather stays warm.
A string of 40-plus degree days will do wonders to open up narrow streets, icy sidewalks and reduce those miserable ice dams.
