ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota schools playing NCAA Division I men's hockey will be split among three conferences next season. They'll still try to make intra-state games an annual January event.
The five teams announced Saturday they'll play a four-game tournament at Xcel Energy Center, with Minnesota serving as permanent host and the other four schools sharing the three other spots on a rotating basis. The yet-to-be-named event will feature semifinal games Friday and a consolation and championship game Saturday.
In 2014, on Jan.24, Minnesota State will play Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State will play Minnesota. Bemidji State will participate in 2015.
Minnesota will join the Big Ten, Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State will help start the NCHC and Minnesota State and Bemidji State will remain in the WCHA.
