'U' Continues To Investigate Attempted Robbery, Releases Photo
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Campus security at the University of Minnesota continues their investigation of an attempted robbery earlier this week. And they want you to see a new picture of a suspect.
Students were on lockdown Monday after a robber used a gun to try and steal a laptop computer from a woman.
The original crime alert included the wrong picture and man has now been cleared of any wrong doing. Police say several students and the man in the picture approached and told them that they were looking for the wrong guy.
"I was pleased with the response from the officers and investigators," Chief Greg Hestness said. "Our apologies. We gotten it taken down from the website immediately and we said we'd take any steps to rectify that on his behalf.
Now, police say security cameras captured images of the male suspect inside Blegen Hall running away about one minute after the incident.
Investigators said the man approached the student in a hallway in Anderson Hall on the West Bank. He showed a gun and demanded her laptop. When the student screamed, the suspect ran into the University's tunnel system with her empty backpack.
Police have investigated 17 robberies on the University's campus since Sept. 1, which is less than average, but patrols will increase nonetheless.
