Toxic Blue-Green Algae Bloom Prompts Warning

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There's a warning out for beach-goers to beware of blue-green algae.

Some types of the algae are very toxic, even deadly, to people and especially pets. The most recent warning is for Carver Lake in Woodbury.

The Ramsey Washington Watershed District confirmed there are blue-green blooms there.

The bright green algae looks like a splash of paint and it sits on the top of lake water.

There's no way to predict if a bloom is toxic, but officials say it's best to avoid contact with the water.

If you think you or your pet has ingested water infected with the blue-green algae, get medical attention immediately.
