Target stops selling Halloween costume it calls "offensive" and "hurtful"

Target says it's no longer selling a Halloween costume that it describes as "offensive" and "hurtful," according to a company statement released on Monday.

The Minnesota-based retail giant didn't disclose specific details about the costume in its statement.

"As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target said. "The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment."

The company went on to say that the costume is hurtful for "Black guests, team members and partners."

"Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won't happen again," Target said. 

When WCCO reached out to Target for more information about the costume, a spokesperson referred back to the comment.

On Wednesday, the company reported its second straight quarter of comparable sales gains, saying a merchandising overhaul under its new CEO is boosting sales throughout its stores.
