St. Paul Firefighter's Funeral Set For Wednesday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A St. Paul firefighter/paramedic who collapsed and died of cardiac arrest will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Funeral services are planned for Shane Clifton, 39, who worked as a firefighter and paramedic for the St. Paul Fire Department at Station No. 14. He was on duty last Monday when, just after 5 p.m., he told his colleagues he wasn't feeling well.

Clifton then suddenly collapsed, was treated by fellow firefighters and EMTs before being transported to Regions Hospital. He died a few hours later.

Funeral services will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church at 1669 Arcade Street in St. Paul. There will be a procession to follow and burial at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Authorities say motorists in the area at that time should expect delays as there will be temporary road closures for the procession. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Arcade Street will be closed from Wheelock Parkway to Larpenteur Avenue.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the eastbound lanes of Larpenteur Avenue will be closed from Arcade Street to Parkway Drive. At 12:05 p.m., Larpenteur Avenue from Arcade Street to I-35W will be closed in both directions for the funeral procession to pass.

From 12:05 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., police and the Minnesota State Patrol will close various cross streets and some freeway ramps when the funeral procession reaches Fort Snelling.

In lieu of flowers, it is preferred that memorials be sent to a fund that has been established for his family.

Funds can be sent to the "Shane Clifton Memorial Fund" at Alliance Bank Attn: Carla Baier, located at 55 E. 5th Street Suite 115 in St. Paul.

Other memorials can be sent to:
