Standoff In New Hope Ends Peacefully With Children Unharmed
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man turned himself over to authorities Tuesday evening following a standoff in the west metro where he held two children inside an apartment for nearly 20 hours.
The children were released unharmed around 2:30 p.m. from an apartment on the 7300 block of 62nd Avenue in New Hope, a suburb northwest of Minneapolis.
Shortly after, the man turned himself over to authorities. Police say the man, who was not identified, was evaluated by medical personnel and a search warrant was executed on the apartment.
The children were returned to family.
The standoff began Monday night after the children's mother called police, reporting that her boyfriend threated her and her children.
She said that he might be armed, and police later said they found several guns in the apartment.
When police arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. Monday, they found the mother outside the apartment, and she said that her boyfriend and her children were still inside.
Negotiators were called, and police blocked off the road.
For a while, others in the apartment building had to leave while officers made contact with the man.
Police say they spoke to him using intercoms.
The standoff lasted about 19 hours.
