Police Fatally Shoot 'Armed' Suspect At Mounds View Liquor Store

MOUNDS VIEW, Minn. (WCCO) -- Police shot and killed a man who they say had a gun in a liquor store in Mounds View Sunday evening.

The Mounds View Police Department said a report of shots fired brought officers to a parking lot on County Road I near Long Lake Road just before 7 p.m. While searching, an armed robbery was reported nearby.

Police say they got a call for an armed robbery at the Aldi grocery store, which is on the other side of the strip mall. When they got to Aldi, a man told them that someone pointed a gun at him and then drove him to the liquor store. The victim told police the gunman ran inside the liquor store.

According to police, officers from both Mounds View and New Brighton entered the liquor store, and say they "were confronted by the armed suspect." This was after an employee ran out and said the gunman was inside the store alone.

Police who went into the store and confronted the armed suspect say during that confrontation several officers fired their guns. He was taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where he was declared dead.

Police said body cameras captured the shooting.

WCCO spoke with a woman shopping at the Aldi Monday morning, who lives in the area. While she's disturbed by what happened, she said it's not going to stop her from living her life and running her errands.

"It's a nice neighborhood, an old neighborhood. Used to love it but now it's a little scary, a little more crime coming in," Dorothy Staples said. "I think there's so many guns around, people are using guns instead of fists. Yeah, it is a little more scary."

As this is a fatal shooting, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
