Mother's Ashes, Urn Stolen From Student's Car
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Winona college student said she wants her most prized procession back: her mother's ashes.
Someone stole the urn and the ashes of Emily Boulay's mother, which she had in her car.
It happened sometime between Wednesday and Saturday in the parking lot of the Washington Crossing apartment building, just a few blocks from Winona State University.
It had been two years since her mother died when Boulay was finally ready to find her a permanent resting place. That's when the theft occurred.
"When I came to open the urn, I saw the box and packing peanuts, and no urn in it," Boulay said.
Someone stole the seven-inch metal urn, which had engraving on its side. Boulay had picked it up at her aunt's place to bring it to the cities.
"I just didn't believe it," Boulay said. "I got really overwhelmed."
While the thief ripped open the box to take the urn, Boulay was surprised nothing else was stolen.
"I figured if someone did go through my car, ashes would freak them out more than seem like something valuable," she said.
Boulay admits she's had trouble with her doors before, but she didn't think anyone would take something like that.
She is asking whoever took it to keep the urn and, at least, return her mother's ashes.
Winona police don't have much to go on. No one reported seeing anything suspicious, police said.
The landlord at Boulay's apartment building did tell her someone tried to break into another car there Sunday night, but the car alarm scared them off.
