'Mission Continues' As Veterans Refurbish Homeless Shelter

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Veterans working to transition back into civilian life served a different kind of cause Saturday.

The "Mission Continues Minneapolis" platoon is working to combat homelessness in the city.

At its kickoff event Saturday, the group refurbished the 50-bed St. Stephens Shelter by cleaning, painting and organizing it.

For veterans, it's a chance to serve, even after they put the uniform away.

The "Mission Continues" started service platoons all over the country.

"It provides another sense of empowerment," one volunteer said. "Because when you're in the military, you've got the family, you've got the community, you've got the mission. 'The Mission Continues' is trying to provide that again once you come home, so you don't feel lost."

They're for veterans, reservists, guard members and active duty military to continue serving at home.
