Michigan child suffers "extensive injuries" in central Minnesota lawn mower incident, sheriff says

A Michigan child is in the hospital after being run over by a lawn mower in central Minnesota Friday afternoon. 

According to the Morrison County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Swanville Township after a report that a lawn mower had run over a 4-year-old child. 

Officials say a 33-year-old Swanville man was operating a "zero-turn lawn mower" with the child from Lake Orion, Michigan, riding on the mower's front platform. At some point, the child fell from the platform and was partially run over by the mower, which had its blades engaged. 

The child suffered "extensive injuries" and was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Children's Minnesota-Minneapolis Hospital for more treatment, according to the sheriff's office. 

"Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen would like to recognize and thank the family members and all emergency responders for their coordinated efforts and immediate response in providing medical care and assistance to the child," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the child and the child's family during this difficult time."

The incident is being investigated.
