MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Whether you just picked up "the axe" and started clanging out some tunes or you're a seasoned guitar vet who shreds epic melodic licks, you're going to want to check out this guitar event in St. Paul this weekend.

In what they are calling the "first-ever guitar-centric fest," McNally Smith College of Music will be hosting the Lowertown Guitar Festival Aug. 10.

The festival's goal is simple: celebrate one of America's most beloved instruments – the guitar – and the musicians who play it.

The event, located in Mears Park in downtown St. Paul, features a free day of live music of all tastes, organizers say. Featured guitarists include Scott Henderson, Marc Ribot, Greg Koch, Pat Donohue and Molly Maher.

In addition to performances, the festival offers free guitar clinics provided by Koch and Jacob Hanson, who has worked with well-known artists Mason Jennings and Hayley Bonar.

After the clinics, teens are encouraged to enter the "Clash of the Teen Guitar Titans" where organizers say a panel of esteemed judges will award prizes to a few talented teens.

The event begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.
