Job-Seeker Takes To Nicollet Mall With Sign & Bag Of Resumes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The latest jobs report isn't hopeful, but it does mean some job-seekers are getting creative.

One man has taken his job search to the streets of Minneapolis.

David Turetsky began his day Monday at 6 a.m. standing on Nicollet Mall, seeking work with a sign and a bag full of resumes. He has high hopes of landing a new job.

"I was an editor at two investment banks for about 14 years," he said.

Turetsky has a bachelor's degree in journalism, and he has edited research reports and marketing presentations. He says he has extensive computer skills and skills that could be applied to human resources and marketing.

And although he's gained some experience marketing himself, he says it has not been easy.

"Well, I started a couple of weeks ago," he said. "I'm a shy person...I was very nervous. It took me I think a half hour, 45 minutes just to get the courage to put the sign on."

Most people walking along Nicollet Mall Monday acted as if Turetsky wasn't there. But some offered encouragement.

"I've had a few people stop, roll down the window and say good luck, or give me the thumbs up, which is great," he said.

Annie was in Minneapolis Monday on business from Arizona. She took Turetsky's picture to send to her fiancé, who is underemployed.

"My fiancé has been out of work," she said. "[He] is working three jobs now, has a master's degree; but is now working as a caregiver, around the clock."

Turetsky said he also spends a lot of time on the Internet looking for work. He said a former co-worker gave him the sign-board idea.
