Weather Threatens Twin Cities 4th Of July Fireworks, Fun

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Red is often the symbol for stop, but it also signifies the heat warning in effect for Minneapolis' Red, White and Boom half marathon on the Fourth of July.

"When you're racing in the summer it's always going to be a concern," said runner Dustin Phillips.

Race organizers cancelled the half marathon because of the intense warmth. Because of that, runners now have the option of a 5K or 6.75 mile race. They will also get a discount towards a future race.

"I've run the Red, White, and Boom and few times, it's never been this hot," said Phillips, who planned to run to half marathon but will do the 6.75 mile race instead. "But I'm glad that they're taking into account the heat, not only for the runners but the volunteers as well."

Temperatures will be in the 80s Wednesday morning, but humid heat will not be the only weather Phillips has to dodge.

"It sounds like it's just gonna be a nasty day all together tomorrow," he said.

That sounds great if you run a movie theater.

"If it's really nice outside, we won't be super busy. If it gets a little bit scattered thunderstorms and hot, we'll be packed," said Michelle Mann, co-owner of Mann Theatres.

Add in the fact that it is a holiday and Mann Theatres could be popping with people.

"Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July, what's open? The movie theater," she said.

It helps to have a few summer blockbusters on the screens, with Mann specifically noting "Incredibles 2" and "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.' She said if the theatres start to get busier due to rough weather, they could add more screenings.

But many are hoping to have their eyes on the sky where fireworks might unfortunately be replaced by thunder and lightning.

WCCO learned many cities will make the final determination on whether or not to have a fireworks show right up to the 10 p.m. hour Wednesday.
