DNR: Man Mauled By Bear In Wis.

SHELL LAKE, Wis. (AP) — A man who was attacked by a black bear in northwestern Wisconsin is recovering at a hospital in the Twin Cities.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the man was attacked while out in his yard near Shell Lake Monday about 9:30 p.m. DNR carnivore specialist David MacFarland says the man's dog apparently had initiated contact with the bear before the man was attacked.

MacFarland says the man's brother was in the cabin, came out and shot and injured the bear, which ran away.

The Burnett County Sheriff's Department says the man was taken by a private party to the hospital in Shell Lake. The DNR says the man was taken by air to a hospital in the Twin Cities. MacFarland says the man is in stable condition.

DNR employees are trying to find the bear.
