DNR: Boat Safe, Sober Over Labor Day Weekend
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The unofficial end of summer is this weekend for most Minnesotans, and authorities are urging those who plan to be out on the water to boat safe and sober.
Authorities with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are expecting a busy weekend on lakes with Labor Day on Monday and our recent hot temperatures. With that in mind, they're asking for people who are planning to hit the water to do so with a sober driver.
DNR officials said there have been eight people killed in boating accidents this year with a ninth person still missing. That's compared to nine people who died last year in boating accidents. Officials said falling overboard, boats capsizing and not having a life jacket are the main reasons for boating fatalities.
