DNR: Boat Launches May Not Be Open For Fishing Opener

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesota's anglers are gearing up for a big weekend as the state's fishing opener is on Saturday.

But it might be tough for some just to get their boat on the lake of their choice thanks to our spring that has felt more like winter. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said it's possible not all of the state's boat launches will be ready by Saturday.

That's due to the late ice-out on many area lakes as it delays inspections, repairs in the installation of docks. The issue is much bigger in northern Minnesota as several lakes are still iced over.

DNR officials said anglers who plan on hitting the lakes this weekend should call ahead to make sure your local boat access is open.

Across the border in Wisconsin, the opener kicked off last weekend despite plenty of ice left on the lakes. That forced state officials to cancel the Governor's fishing opener. There were still plenty of die-hards willing to bundle up in order to drop their lines.
