Consumer Watchdog Releases Dangerous Toys List

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Just in time for holiday shopping, a consumer watchdog group released a list of what it considers the most dangerous toys.

About a dozen items are highlighted in the annual toy safety report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

"Not all these dangerous products violate the law but consumers shopping for children should watch out for choking and toxic hazards this holiday season," said Ashley Grimm with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

The group demonstrated how to test a toy to see if it's a choking hazard by using a toilet paper tube.

They also warn of toxins in toys -- especially lead and chemicals in plastic called phthalates.

This year's list includes the Hot Wheels Rat Bomb, a mini-crossbow and the Elmo talking cell phone. Click on the links below for a list of recalled toys and for buying tips.
