Police arrest 17-year-old in connection with fatal Twin Cities park shooting

Police say a 16-year-old boy was killed in a shooting at a park Sunday night in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at Hartkopf Park around 10:45 p.m., the city's police department said.

They found the injured boy who had been shot and provided medical aid, but he died at the scene. 

Brian Turk has lived in the neighborhood for a dozen years. He says the park is usually pretty quiet after sunset, but Fourth of July weekend is the exception.

"I was going to bed around 10, there was people at the gazebo shelter area and then there were fireworks being let off and so that was all I heard, saw. And then it was just flashing lights after 11 o'clock when I woke up," Turk said. 

Police say Hennepin County crime scene investigators are helping with the case.

"Hopefully they're able to find whoever did it and bring them to justice," Turk said.

On Wednesday, the Brooklyn Park Police Department announced officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on probably cause second-degree murder and recovered the weapon used in the shooting.
