Boy, 12, Dies During Basketball Game In Baxter

BAXTER, Minn. (WCCO) -- A 12-year-old Grand Rapids, Minn. boy died after suffering cardiac arrest during a basketball game in Baxter, Minn. Thursday afternoon.

Baxter police said he was participating in a 7th grade boys basketball game at Forestview Middle School when he entered cardiac arrest.

First responders attempted to perform life-saving measures, and he was transported to Essentia St. Joe's Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

On Friday, the school superintendent identified the boy as Breck Liestman, a student at Robert J. Elkington Middle School in Grand Rapids.

The school was putting a crisis plan into place, and counseling staff from nearby schools were made available to both students and teachers. The school district sent out an instant alert to staff after the incident.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will work to determine what led to the boy's cardiac arrest.
