Bikers To Rev Up For Safety At State Capitol

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- On Wednesday morning, hundreds of motorcyclists from across the state converged at the Minnesota State Capitol.

The group American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education wants lawmakers to give serious thought to motorcycle safety. They were set to demonstrate in the Capitol's Great Hall, below the Rotunda for one hour Wednesday morning.

There were 53 motorcycle fatalities last year, which is an uptick from figures the year before.

ABATE said they intended to demonstrate to influence lawmakers to increase penalties for those who cause harm by driving negligently. They also aimed to improve the safety of all Minnesota motorcyclists.

However, their third state initiative is to keep the existing motorcycle helmet law in Minnesota as is.

"We will maintain your right to wear or not wear a helmet while riding," said their press materials.
