Apostle Islands Ice Caves Proving Very Popular

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- According to the National Park Service, about 12,000 people visited the caves on Lake Superior near the Apostle Islands this weekend.

The ice caves drew more than 138,000 tourists last year, when the deep freeze made the caves accessible to pedestrians for the first time in nearly five years.

Spokesperson Julie Van Stappen says they saw people from all over the Midwest this year. She says each year the formations are different.

"This year there's a lot more color, and very unique." Van Stappen said.

And remember if you go, prepare for a long walk. There is an admission fee as well.
