A 'Very Quiet' Season For Tornadoes In Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- No damage has been reported from a tornado in far northern Minnesota Wednesday night. In fact, it's been a quiet season for twisters.
The tornado reported near Williams in Lake of the Woods County would be the 14th so far this season.
"The average for Minnesota annually is around 27 tornadoes. So we're quite below that statistic," Lisa Schmit of the National Weather Service in Chanhassen said.
Quiet Tornado Season
Schmit says there's no one answer for such a low number, but says our cool and extended spring could be one factor. Another factor could be a lack of unstable weather patterns in the second half of the summer.
Last year, Minnesota reported 37 tornadoes.
The fewest ever recorded was five in 1988.
In 2010, Minnesota led the nation with 113 tornadoes in one season.
