Woman Killed When Dive Boat Capsizes In Upper Keys

ISLAMORADA (CBSMiami) – A visitor from Washington was killed when a charter boat she was on sank off Islamorada on Sunday.

According to the Coast Guard, around 3:15 p.m. they received a call that the  30-foot scuba charter Get Wet, which had just left a mooring on Molasses Reef, was taking on water.  The vessel then sank very quickly trapping 27-year old Amit Rampurkarl and 36-year old Aimee Rhodes in the forward cabin.  The captain and five other passengers were thrown into the choppy water.

The Coast Guard said the captain dove down and was able to pull both Rampurkarl and Rhodes, both of whom were unconscious, to the surface.  A good Samaritan in the area picked up Rhodes and Rampurkarl and raced toward shore where Rhodes was pronounced dead.

Rampurkarl, who is from New York, was airlifted to Baptist Hospital where he's listed in serious condition.

"The Coast Guard is thankful for good Samaritans on the water who maintain a watchful eye and stand ready to assist boaters in distress," said Capt. Pat DeQuattro, commander of Coast Guard Sector Key West.

A commercial salvage company has been contacted to salvage the dive boat.
