Caught On Camera: Broward Bus Driver Beaten In Robbery
LAUDERDALE LAKES (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff's Office has arrested a man wanted for beating a Broward bus driver and the incident was caught on surveillance video.
BSO investigators released the video Tuesday. Investigators say Dudley Pierre, 22, tried to rob bus driver Larry Khan while he was in the middle of driving his Broward County Transit bus.
The incident happened Thursday, Feb. 23rd as Kahn was driving his bus southbound along the 3100 block of State Road 7 in Lauderdale Lakes.
According to BSO, Pierre approached the driver and put his foot on the bus brake pedal. The bus stopped abruptly which caused passengers to lunge forward. Pierre then punched Kahn in the face while trying to take his cell phone, said BSO.
Khan, who was pinned to his seat due to his seatbelt, couldn't even defend himself.
Pierre, then ran off the bus, but not for long.
Minutes later, he returned but this time Khan fought back and tried to hold on to Pierre while a passenger tried to help but Pierre still managed to get away.
Khan told CBS4's Joan Murray that he has lost partial vision in one eye due to the attack, but hopes it will return.
But on that day, Pierre wasn't done causing trouble yet.
Up the street from the bus, investigators say he confronted a customer outside of a pawn shop at 2950 N. State Road 7. Pierre threatened the driver and said his car was going to blow up and he began hitting the driver, Charles Green Jr., with a large sharp stick, according to BSO.
Jasmine Badger was with her cousin Charles when he was attacked.
"He tapped him on the shoulder and he had this stick and he was just pushing it into the window trying to stab him but my cousin had the end of the stick. My cousin thought it was a joke at first and he was laughing but when he found out it was real that's when he said his defense mode came on and he was trying to save his life," said Badger.
Pierre ended up running away again but passengers aboard the bus were able to point out Pierre to authorities who captured and arrested him.
"They said they were going to Baker Act him but I don't think that's the right thing to do. I think he needs to be punished for his crime because he could have killed my cousin and he doesn't even know the man."
Green was not seriously hurt. Police still don't know why Pierre attacked the bus driver or Green.
Pierre is charged with robbery, burglary and battery.
When he appeared before Broward County bond court Judge John Hurley, Pierre denied he had a prior criminal record, but Hurley noted that he had been charged with battery in the past.
Pierre is being held without bond at Broward County's Main Jail.

CBS4 reached Pierre's mother in Deerfield Beach who said her son suffers from mental health issues and is on medication.
"He's sick in the head. He's sick," said Rosemary Pierre.
