TAMPA (CBSMiami/AP) — Tampa community leaders and sheriff's officials are pleading with the public to hold peaceful protests in the wake of an officer's fatal shooting of an unarmed black man.

Five people were arrested Thursday as groups of people damaged cars, threw trash and lit fires in reaction to the shooting.

During a news conference Friday evening, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Col. Donna Lusczynski said Sheriff David Gee met with the African-American community on Friday about the shooting.

On Tuesday, a sheriff's SWAT team descended on the home where 22-year-old Levonia Riggins lived. They had a search warrant. Lusczynski said Riggins was found in bed and jumped up and moved his waistband.

An officer fired one shot.

The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office is investigating.
