Suspicious Milk Removed From Broward Schools

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Fumes in a McArthur Dairy packaging plant are being blamed for an off-taste in milk delivered to Broward County schools that had some children complaining of stomach problems. The milk was ordered out of the schools, and has been picked up by the dairy.

The problem was first reported at Cooper City Elementary, where almost a dozen students complained of stomach problems Friday.

Cafeterias stopped serving the milk to students Friday after the district started investigating the problem, and ordered the milk removed from schools on Friday. A district spokeswoman says the supplier, McArthur Dairy, sent workers to collect the half-pint cartons.

Liliana Esposito, a spokeswoman for Dean Foods, the Dallas-based parent company of McArthur Dairy, said fumes from construction material affected the milk.

The company said it had consulted with health professionals and concluded there was no health risk. Concerned parents were advised to consult their child's physician.

In a statement issued Saturday the food company said "However, we are withdrawing the product because it is not in keeping with our high quality standards. When we identified the quality issue, we immediately advised the affected schools not to serve the milk, and we quickly moved to ensure replacement milk is provided. We have consulted with the material manufacturer and health professionals, and confirmed that the affected product poses no health risk. Nonetheless, anyone with concerns should feel free to contact their physician. McArthur Dairy is committed to producing the highest quality products. This incident is clearly not in keeping with our high quality standards and we do sincerely regret, and apologize for, any inconvenience that this caused. "
