Sports Agenda For Wednesday (7/20/11)

Big Story:
The Marlins got back to their losing ways last night and ridiculous greed/a power play from four NFL players blew up in their face yesterday.
Let's hit the agenda as hard as Allen West hits the crazy sauce!

Firsties:
Well, the Marlins are still 11-5 for the season, but with their ace pitcher on the mound last night (Anibal Sanchez) the Marlins bats were quieter than Allen West at an AARP meeting.
The Marlins left 16 players on base and couldn't manages to figure out the Padres pitching staff. Worse yet, the Marlins are still trying to figure out how many players are trying to steal bases.
Not a good sign that Sanchez and Buck couldn't keep guys from stealing more than a Republican looking at Social Security and Medicare.
So the Marlins will try again tonight to solve the Padres' running and pitching.
The loss dropped the Marlins to a full game behind the Mets for last place in the NL East.
But, the two teams above the Marlins are their next two opponents. The Mets come to play at Sun Life starting Friday and then the Marlins head to DC to take on the Nationals starting next Tuesday.
That means there's at least a chance the Fish can claw their way out of last place in the NL East.
So you're saying there's a chance!!!!!

NFL Update:
The lockout continues in the NFL, but things appear to finally be ready to be voted on.
From all reports, the deal is struck and now both sides have to ratify it.
The players executive committee will vote first on Wednesday, followed by an owner's vote on Thursday. Assuming all reports are correct.
From there, there will have to be a day or two to give teams time to digest the rules.
Then, there will have to be a 72-hour window to allow teams to sign their own free agents.
Then, unrestricted free agency is unleashed and mass chaos will erupt as teams scurry to get the top players available.
But…four players: Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson, thought they were above the other players.
They all made a power play yesterday to all become unrestricted free agents or be paid $10 million in damages.
Why would they do that?
It's all about greeed.
See, if those players are removed from the franchise tag, then all four can sign a very rich free agent contract with any team they choose.
So, Manning could tease every team in the league and get a $30 million a year salary that he covets.
If they didn't get their way, they'd be forced to play at the franchise tag price which is the average of the top 5 salaries at their position. Unless they're in the third year of their tag and then it would be the average of the top 5 quarterbacks salary.
For Manning and Brees, this would be much less than what they could get as a true free agent.
Mankins and Jackson would actually be better off keeping a franchise tag on for a third year if they're at that point.
In reality, the NFLPA executive committee was "infuriated" at the power play by those four players.
Truth be known, it wasn't the players as much as it was NFLPA lawyer Jeffrey Kessler trying to extract blood from a turnip.
If he got even more for the players, or even derailed the deal, he continues to get paid tons of money. And the more he gets, the more he wants, like every other American.
So in essence, it was greed that almost derailed the deal.
I'm all for players getting their own. Lord knows working as a journalist, I know all about not getting paid fair market value compared to the work we put out.
That said, there comes a point when enough is enough and past that you're just getting disgustingly greedy.
For now, it looks like all systems are a go for the new deal to get ratified as early as Friday.
Let's hope it's finished and we can finally start talking about free agents and the Dolphins roster, rather than analyzing a CBA.
