Sports Agenda for Wednesday (2/2/11)

Big Story:
Even though college football season just ended, today is a huge day for fans, and it has nothing to do with a groundhog. Today is National Signing Day. It's the first day recruits can officially declare where they will go to school. As the day started, Florida State was looking like their old selves near the top of the national rankings and there's nothing to think they won't stay at or near the top at the end of the day. Florida was also putting together a nice class and Miami will have a decent class, but not up to the standards previous coaches have set.

I'm going to try and have a running story on the big three schools and hopefully get some information from FIU at some point in the day.

Heat:
(next game Thursday February 3 @ Orlando)
The Heat are enjoying a couple of days off after their demolition of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Heat are entering a tough stretch over the next two weeks as they play 6 of their next 8 games on the road. They will get a break after the 16th for the All-Star Break.

Fun stat of the day….combined the big three of LeBron, DWade, and CBosh are averaging 70 points per game. The entire rest of the team (12 players) is averaging 50 points per game, but that includes Udonis Haslem's 8 points per game and he hasn't played in months.

Dolphins:
Not much going on with the Fins. They are in draft preparation mode as the combine will happen in the next several weeks. Plus, until the new CBA is done, the Fins can't do any trades or have target free agents until they know who will be a free agent under the new CBA.

Marlins:
T-Minus 15 days until the Marlins open spring training to pitchers and catchers. Here's the question for you. Give me your over/under prediction for how many games the Marlins will win. We'll set the line at 81 games.

College Football:
Well, as stated earlier, today is the day when millions of college football fans drool over 17 and 18 year old boys. That just sounds wrong doesn't it.

Anyways, as stated above FSU is the big dog going into today and they should pull in at least one more five-star recruit and possibly two by the end of the day. Just remember one thing. Yes, FSU will have the much ballyhooed class, but teams with good coaches (read: Oregon, Boise State, Missouri, etc) can take the 2 star player and turn them into a first round NFL star by the end of their college career.

The problem for fans of teams other than FSU is that Jimbo Fisher has a rich history of being involved with players who have gone on to big things in the NFL.

Panthers:
Well, the Panthers went to Tornoto hoping to pull ahead of the Buffalo Sabers for tenth place in the Eastern Conference. Yeah, that didn't quite happen as the Panthers lost another heartbreaker, 4-3 in a shootout. While shootout's are great for fans, it has to be especially brutal for the losing team to come up short like that, luckily the Panthers are used to losing.
