Sports Agenda For Tuesday (9/20/11)
Big Story:
Wow, conference Armageddon is finally upon us in college football, the Dolphins won one more game at Sun Life Stadium than I have in their last 11 games there, and the Marlins beat the Braves…really!
Hitting the agenda harder than Charlie Sheen does a crack pipe, here we go.
Firsties/College Football:
Usually I wouldn't lead the agenda with college football except on a Thursday, but wow, what a weekend.
First, big props to FIU for another big victory. I'm pulling for them to go undefeated this season. It'd be a great story this season.
Now onto the bigger issue.
Over the weekend, the ACC accepted Pittsburgh and Syracuse into the conference.
Today the Big East said not so fast my friend, and told the two schools they couldn't leave until 2014.
This will change with a bigger financial contribution from those school to the conference.
So now, the ACC will have 14 teams.
That means the Pac-12 and SEC will also likely go to at least 14 teams.
That means the Big XII is dead, and the Big East is on life support.
Now, here's how things look right now….
Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are more than likely headed to the Pac-12 to make it the Pac-16.
That leaves Baylor, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State looking for a home.
TCU is also left wondering what to do if the Big East implodes further.
Missouri would theoretically be in the catbird seat of the remaining Big XII schools and could be targeted by the Big East, Big 10, and the SEC.
While the Big Ten would make the most sense, their first priority is Notre Dame…good luck with that.
Whoever takes in Missouri will take in the St. Louis and Kansas City television markets, which means $$$, which is what all this is about.
But, the SEC is rumored to be looking at swiping West Virginia, possibly Florida State, and possibly Missouri, which would leave one spot open, which could be filled with TCU if things fell into place properly.
There could also be a merger of the remaining teams from the Big XII into the Big East for a super conference….but travel will kill the finances of all schools.
Honestly, nothing is going to happen until Texas and Oklahoma make their moves.
Until then, it's just educated guesses.
Dolphins:
Yknow, I was trying to find something positive about the defense and I just couldn't.
They look tired, worn out, out of shape, and unable to perform the simplest tasks like cover the receiver.
Someone please explain to me how Benny Sapp was cut after getting torched on a 99-yard touchdown and Nolan Carroll stays on the team after getting torched repeatedly the first two weeks.
Wonder if the Fins are afraid of cutting him because of his family's political power in the state.
Doubtful, but he's just not giving them anything worthy of him staying on the field.
At 0-2, the Dolphins have about a 12 percent chance of making it to the playoffs.
So now, the Fins have to face the possibility of having to "Suck For (Andrew) Luck"
Marlins: (vs. Braves, Fox Sports Florida)
The Marlins won last night.
"I think I'll wet my pants," said Harry Doyle of the excitement over a Marlins game.
No Heat news anymore because that season is as good as cancelled.
